While reading The Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos by Jim Starlin and Ron Lim, I stumbled across these two dialogue gems. Continue Reading “Great Comic Quotes: Silver Surfer #37”

Kochalka!
I have an affinity for cartoonists who draw in a style so simplistic it, at first, appears you could draw equally well if you just put a smidgen of effort into it. Of course, when you actually put pen to paper, you begin to realize that drawing really “basic” cartoons is just as hard or harder than penciling photo-realistic facsimiles of Hollywood superheroes. It’s for this reason I truly admire the work of guys like Graham Annable and Anthony Clark, not to mention the inimitable James Kochalka. Continue Reading “Kochalka!”
Don’t forget Bale-entine’s Day!
A few years back, Bale-entine’s Day was created. Here’s the basic formula: Batman Quotes + Dreamy Bale = Funny Bale-entine. And, here’s a bit more information on this grand holiday’s origins—check out the originals. Continue Reading “Don’t forget Bale-entine’s Day!”
What’s in a surname?
Gibbons isn’t a name you hear all too often. It’s not uncommon, but it’s not quite common either. You’ve got a fair number of schlubs like me who use it to sign our checks and a few celebrities who sport it—Comic artist Dave Gibbons, TV Host Leeza Gibbons and ZZ Top frontman Billy Gibbons—but that’s about it. Gibbons isn’t a last name that crops up in fiction much either, so it was kind of exciting when—while watching the Super Bowl—I heard, “What if I told you that Gibbons was working with the Irish Mob?” Continue Reading “What’s in a surname?”
Why you should be reading “B.P.R.D.”
I’m not big on naming favorites. I like plenty of different things for plenty of different reasons, and hate when I’m forced to boil down all the great comics (for example) I love into a single pick during casual conversation. However, selecting a choice book to highlight when this question comes up is highly preferable to falling into the annoying nerd stereotype that would likely answer with long-winded and possibly pretentious answer. (Sorry, my fellow nerds! I’ve heard that happen far too many times and man, can you not hear how annoying it is? Really?) My standby for when a question of favorites arises? Mike Mignola, John Arcudi and Guy Davis’ always satisfying B.P.R.D. Continue Reading “Why you should be reading “B.P.R.D.””

Belated thanks for mustache support
I meant to blog a lot more about mustaches back in Movember. Here are a few folks whose support was appreciated even though I never found time to blog about it when it was relevant. Continue Reading “Belated thanks for mustache support”
This is it: A “Wizard” Remembrance/Reaction
This week, news that both Wizard and ToyFare magazine were being canceled hit the interwebs. I did my big college internship at Wizard and then scored a job there a few months later when I graduated from college. It was my first career-type job and it led to a ton of great friendships and terrific experiences. I wouldn’t be rocking a job I love at Dark Horse Comics if not for my time at Wizard, nor would I know so many rad, excellent and intelligent folks around the comics community, many of whom I consider great friends. Continue Reading “This is it: A “Wizard” Remembrance/Reaction”
Beer Trek
I drank my first beer around a campfire in the Northwoods of Wisconsin when I was 16 years old. Due in no small part to that experience, a hearty drink—in my mind—is always best after a bit of adventure, ideally with steadfast compatriots. Continue Reading “Beer Trek”
