Two years with the Outlaw Jessi James

Over the past two years, I’ve worked two different full-time jobs, dabbled in the field of freelance journalism and collected unemployment. In those same two years, I’ve lived in three different states, pulled a U-Haul from coast to coast, raised over $1,200 with a friend and a moustache to help fight men’s cancer and shook hands with Edward James Olmos. It’s been a crazy period of my life to say the least. Thankfully, I’ve been lucky enough to have had one amazing and gorgeous constant to carry me through it all: my beautiful girlfriend Jessi.

Mal Reynolds as Hank Pym?! I think he may be a Hulkbuster.

While I’m not sure it’s as spot-on as my casting of Sam Rockwell as Hank Pym when rumors began circulating that the “Moon” star would appear in “Iron Man 2,” I absolutely love the idea of Nathan Fillion getting to be an Avenger.

Frank Frazetta, a true great, dies at 82.

Legendary fantasy artist Frank Frazetta died this week. It seems only fitting that the sad news of his death, the passing of an artist who inspired so many illustrators, would lead to a ton of really touching and gorgeous tribute art. Here’s one of my favorites. It’s from Scott Campbell…

Ruminations on storytelling, heroes and comic book worlds as encouraged by “Iron Man 2”

I saw “Iron Man 2” last night, and while it’s not a groundbreaking landmark in filmmaking history, I thought it was a darn good action flick. I laughed, I thrilled to the excitement, I got pumped up and I even got a little emotional, but most importantly, I left happy.

Iron Man 2

However, I think the most interesting—and encouraging—thing “Iron Man 2” did for me happened after I left the theater. The film had actively engaged my nerd brain to the point where I ended up turning over numerous thoughts about the character of Iron Man and, furthermore, the universe he resides in before branching out to comparisons between other fictional worlds. That’s the mark of a good comic flick, in my estimation. It gets you excited to think about superheroes again.

“Lost” Comics!

Much as I enjoy speculating about the numerous mysteries of “Lost,” I haven’t blogged much about the show’s actual episodes since they talked about Ewoks last season. I’ll leave the heavy “Lost” commentary to people getting paid to write it, but that won’t keep me from highlighting my favorite thing the final season has led to: “Lost” Comics!

WARNING! “Lost” spoilers ahead! Tread lightly, pilgrim, and only move on past here… IF YOU DARE!

A hell of a bear!

Illustrator and graphic designer Julius Santiago has a project called “365 Bears” that’s well worth checking out. For a whole year, Mr. Santiago is taking his relatively simple bear design and dressing it up in all sorts of outfits and costumes to compile 365 unique bears. There’s a new bear each day and you can view them all at KingPanPan.com.

All Day Pizza Buffet: A Post-It for Dirk

After blogging yesterday’s Post-It doodles, I received a friendly prompt from Dark Horse super fan and knowledgeable comics aficionado Dirk Bauman reminding me that I owe him a doodle. I set blue Uniball pen to flimsy yellow paper and here’s what I came up with. It’s heavily inspired by this blog post from Dirk’s Comic Book Corner.

All Day Pizza Buffet: Post-Its

I often find that reading about comics and looking at comic art all day is a lot like watching the Food Network. Much like seeing Emeril whip up some garlic mashed potatoes can send me into the kitchen to try and concoct something delicious, viewing gorgeous graphic art all day is hard without taking a second to doodle here and there.
