Not sure why this thing I made back in August isn’t the most popular thing on the internet yet…

“How about a Jim Gordon?”
With a very generous donation of $100 before the auction deadline of November 1, my good friend and longtime Movember supporter Josh Wigler claimed my mustache style rights for 2011.
After jokingly suggesting I shoot for a Jeff Daniels a la “Gettysburg” walrus-stache, Mr. Wigler decided I should attempt to emulate one of comic book history’s greatest mustaches… Continue Reading ““How about a Jim Gordon?””
Hero Hugs
The caped crusaders of comic books are popularly known for foiling crimes, thwarting capers and derailing evil plots. What people tend to forget is that the masked marauders that fill the pages of funny books are also known to lay down mad hugs from time to time.
Yep, even the cold, calculating Batman’s a hugger… Continue Reading “Hero Hugs”
Ruminations on storytelling, heroes and comic book worlds as encouraged by “Iron Man 2”
I saw “Iron Man 2” last night, and while it’s not a groundbreaking landmark in filmmaking history, I thought it was a darn good action flick. I laughed, I thrilled to the excitement, I got pumped up and I even got a little emotional, but most importantly, I left happy.
However, I think the most interesting—and encouraging—thing “Iron Man 2” did for me happened after I left the theater. The film had actively engaged my nerd brain to the point where I ended up turning over numerous thoughts about the character of Iron Man and, furthermore, the universe he resides in before branching out to comparisons between other fictional worlds. That’s the mark of a good comic flick, in my estimation. It gets you excited to think about superheroes again.

What ongoing comic series should I begin collecting as graphic novels?
A while back, I asked for suggestions on how to keep up with comics in a price effective way. In the few comments and conversations I had about the subject, the answer came back resoundingly that reading comics once they are collected is cheaper (Math I could do on my own, but glad to get some feedback as well) and just as satisfying, especially as it allows you to avoid a majority of the crap that hits stands.

The butler’s night off
I drew this back in February after reading an issue of The Outsiders in which Alfred was particularly 007ish. Though I didn’t have any story in mind for this picture before I drew it—I really just wanted to draw a sweet mustache—I think what is likely going on here is…

A few ‘Few Line Reviews’
Hey folks, I’ve trucked through a fair share of comics this week (my new daily train ride has certainly helped me allot more time to reading) and even though I’m only halfway through all the books I want to read, I’m posting up these initial brief reviews. I’m hitting the DMV (or MVC, as it’s oddly called in New Jersey) tomorrow and then picking up my broseph from the airport for a weekend of New York City fun, so if I do get through the rest of those books, I likely won’t have time for reaction-reviews.
So, please enjoy this smattering.

Smell the cilantro, Batman!
I wanted to get this up last week when it came out, but couldn’t find the time. Anyway, here’s a shot from Gail Simone’s Secret Six #2, and one of the most hilarious single panel’s in comic history!
Context: Catman is fighting Batman to keep him occupied as the Secret Six break into Alcatraz. Throughout the fight, Catman continually comments on how he smells cilantro or wonders if there is a Mexican restaurant nearby. Finally, Batman gets fed up and says, “If you must know…I had a burrito!”
Fantastic!
The Happiest Bat-man!
So, after reading and editing a ton of Staff Writer Steve Sunu’s Webcomics of the Week column, I’ve been hankering to start drawing some comics of my own. Now, I’m no artist and was always more of a doodler within the lined domain of my school notebook paper, but heck, I figure even doodles can convey some comedy!
Here’s two I did today in little spans of free time—both of these puppies can be clicked on and enlarged, by the way—I hope you enjoy them!
The first one sprung out of a conversation with Staff Writers Steve Sunu and Kevin Mahadeo—and Mahadeo is the man behind the Mobile vs. Mobile joke—so, credit where credit’s due. “Happy Bats” is all me and the idea of what little moments make a dark, mysterious hero truly happy just cracks me up. So, you’ll likely see a few more of these cropping up as I come up with them.
